When is a colonoscopy recommended?
Colonoscopy is the standard procedure for examining the large intestine and the lower section of the small intestine. Colonoscopy is particularly important for the early detection of bowel cancer and its precursors. For this reason, this examination is recommended as a preventive measure for all men from the age of 50 and women from the age of 55. In addition, colonoscopy is recommended for screening in cases of familial risk, i.e. if direct relatives have been diagnosed with bowel cancer.
Various symptoms can give rise to a colonoscopy. These include
- Blood in the stool
- Increased abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation
- Iron deficiency or anemia
- Unclear weight loss
A colonoscopy enables your doctor to identify the cause of these complaints. Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, precursors of bowel cancer, as well as possible inflammations or malignant changes in the bowel mucosa can be detected in this way. We also recommend a colonoscopy for follow-up care after bowel surgery, for example after bowel cancer surgery.
So there are many reasons for a colonoscopy. But whether for prevention, as a follow-up examination or for acute complaints: We are happy to welcome patients from the Rastatt area to our practice for an individual consultation and care. The colonoscopy at a glance
We offer comprehensive and safe colonoscopies especially for patients in Rastatt and the surrounding area at InnerMed. Before the examination, we take the time to inform you in detail about the procedure and the advantages and disadvantages. A personal consultation a few days before the appointment allows us to explain all the steps in detail and answer any questions.
The outpatient colonoscopy is painless and usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. If necessary, tissue samples are taken or small endoscopic procedures are performed, such as the removal of polyps to prevent cancer. After the examination, you will be taken to a recovery room where a final discussion about the results will take place. If necessary, we will be happy to organize a cab for your return journey and recommend probiotic bacteria to speed up your digestive recovery. You can eat and drink as usual after the examination.
