at a glance: why get vaccinated?
Why vaccinate?
Vaccinations are safe, effective and are one of the most important tools of preventive medicine. They provide reliable protection against diseases that were often fatal in the past. Those who are vaccinated not only protect themselves, but also other people who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons (e.g. children, elderly people, pregnant women or people with an immune deficiency). In order to prevent the spread of diseases such as measles, as large a proportion of the population as possible must be vaccinated. This is known as herd immunity.
Modern vaccines are generally very well tolerated; long-term side effects are extremely rare. Please note: Even if you have already received most of the important vaccinations as a child, you should have them regularly refreshed in order to optimize your vaccination protection.
How do vaccinations work?
Our body is constantly confronted with a large number of pathogens (such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi). As the body’s natural defense function, the immune system is responsible for preventing the penetration of these pathogens, removing harmful substances from the body and preventing infections. To do this, it produces certain antibodies to prevent the spread of pathogens in the body.
A vaccination uses precisely this defense mechanism. The body is confronted with a vaccine consisting of specific pathogens in a weakened form. The immune system then begins to produce the appropriate antibodies. During this process, so-called vaccine responses can occur, which can feel like a cold or mild flu. But it’s worth it: the next time the body comes into contact with the pathogen after vaccination, the immune cells are already familiar with it and can react. The disease then does not break out, or only in a very attenuated form.
